Self-Righteousness
I heard a few negative comments about my blog yesterday. They felt that I was not understanding just “how bad” Sarah Huckabee Sanders really is and that action “needs to be taken” against the evil policies of the white house. Is it my imagination or have we regressed back to the violent peace marches in the late 1960’s and 1970’s when protestors forgot the issues and began to demonize other people? Once we get self-righteous, it is easy to mistreat others in the name of morality.
In conversing with a friend about this issue I asked what would have happened if roles were reversed. Would there still be righteous indignation? What if:
A restaurant refused to serve a member of the Obama administration in protest of the Iran Nuclear deal. Would that be proper?
What if auto dealerships had refused to sell Ted Kennedy a car after Mary Jo was found dead in his automobile?
What would have been the result of a school denying the Obama children enrollment as a means of protesting an Obama policy that the school did not care for?
The minute we get self-righteous about a moral issue we support and start seeing people with other opinions as the “enemy” we begin to act badly. Soon we are treating other people as “lesser” people and others stop listening to us. Is this really where we want to go? Let us stop being self-righteous and listen to others. Let us stop demonizing those who disagree with us. Pride comes before the fall. Let us humbly begin dialoging and problem solving together.
