Six Decades

I turned sixty years old over the weekend. Now people will stop teasing me about being fifty-nine. Since turning fifty-nine people have asked me “how long have you been fifty-nine?” They did not believe that I really was honest about my age. Now, I really am sixty. I wonder how many decades of life I have remaining. Will it be four, three, two, one or less?

The Psalmist tells us that life is made up of seventy years and if we are strong, we are given eighty years. Modern medicine, however, has expanded our expectations. Increasingly we find people living into their nineties and even the hundreds. This certainly can be a blessing from God. Myself, my daughter, and my grandson are all alive because of the miracles brought to us by modern medicine. I am grateful for those medical miracles. Had I lived in another generation, I probably would not be alive to see my sixtieth birthday. And yet, I have met people in their late 90’s or even 100’s who despair at life and lamented that they “have lived too long.”

Now that I have reached my sixtieth birthday I wonder. Is the number of years as important as how we use each of those years, and the days contained in those years? Each day is a gift from God. Do we view them as a gift, or something that we are entitled to? Do we use them to glorify God and benefit our fellow humans or do we squander those days using them only for ourselves?

Life is short no matter how long it is. We are not promised or entitled to any certain amount of years. Use each day well for the glory of God and the blessing of our brothers and sisters.
