How Do You See Yourself?

2 Samuel 9:8New International Version (NIV)

Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?”

What a tragedy it would be to go through life as a child of the King in God’s eyes, yet as a lowly pauper in our own eyes.  That is precisely what happened to Mephibosbeth after his grandfather, King Saul, and father, Jonathan, were killed in battle.  Fleeing the palace, Mephibosbeth became crippled as a result of a fall and was taken to Lodebar, a poverty-stricken city where he lived almost his entire life in terrible conditions.  Years later, David, who succeeded Saul as king, ordered Mephibosbeth to be brought to live in the palace and treated as royalty.

Despite being royalty and the fact that his father was in a covenant relationship with David, Mephibosbeth settled for poverty because he saw himself as a loser and an outcast.  His life was transformed instantly, but think of all the years he wasted.
