Preparing for Passover
November 27, 2019
Read: Mark 14:12-16
And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. (v. 15)
Preparing a Seder meal, an important part of the Jewish commemoration of Passover, requires multiple steps and attention to symbolic details. Each item holds significance, from the unleavened bread to bitter herbs to roasted egg and lamb, pointing to the Israelites’ deliverance from bondage. God connected their daily human need for food to ways they could remember his presence and provision.
In today’s passage, Jesus’ disciples asked where they were going to be sharing this meal. He told them precisely where to go and what to do. “Look for a man carrying a jar of water,” usually a woman’s task, so the man would stand out, yet the timing had to be perfect: “Follow him to the house he enters and tell the owner I would like to use the guest room.” Jewish custom dictated that available rooms should be given to pilgrims who needed one for Passover. This room was large enough for all the disciples, even furnished and ready. Little did the disciples know that it would be their last meal with Jesus before he died, that he would be the final sacrificial lamb. All the details were in place.
Have you seen God’s preparation in your own life, arranging in advance the places and situations where you shared food and life with others? The details of our lives are significant too. If we look carefully, we will see that he continues to provide all our needs. —Denise Vredevoogd
As you pray, thank God for the details that fell into place for our salvation.
