Breakfast with Jesus
November 30, 2019
Read: John 21:9-14
When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. (v. 9)
A common writing prompt or party conversation starter is the question, “If you could have dinner with a famous person, who would you choose?” In today’s passage, the disciples get to eat with none other than their teacher, who had died three days earlier. Thanks to Jesus’ advice, they had just hauled in a massive, miraculous catch of fish. Jesus must have known they would be hungry and started a fire on the beach while they were still on the lake. The king of the universe, the conqueror over death, stooped to feed them, to care for them.
I love his invitation, “Come and have breakfast” (v. 12). The simple act of cooking fish over an open fire demonstrates Jesus’ understanding of their human needs. Even though his own newly resurrected body experienced no physical limitations, his friends still needed to eat. After they had breakfast together, Jesus took Peter aside, forgave him, restored their relationship, and equipped him for future kingdom work. By meeting Peter’s physical needs first, Jesus paved the way for fulfilling his even deeper spiritual need, to be forgiven and given a purpose. The disciples probably relished and remembered that breakfast more than any other.
If I could choose someone to dine with, I think I’d choose Jesus. I might ask him to cook for me too. How about you? —Denise Vredevoogd
As you pray, thank Jesus for his compassionate care and to be present at every meal.
