We’ve Got Everything We Need

Read: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

You are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. (v. 7)

“Have you got everything you need?” We once asked our daughter that the day before she was leaving for a study semester abroad, only to discover she had lost her passport.

It’s an important question when you prepare for a long trip—or a long wait. The Corinthians are embarked on the pilgrimage of faith. Do they have everything they need as they walk in faith and wait for the Lord’s return? Yes they do, says the apostle. “You are not lacking in any [spiritual] gift.”

What resources do we have to help us wait in the time between the times of Christ’s advent and return? There’s prayer, and God’s Word, and the church. But first and foremost we have the presence and power of the Spirit. “And it is God who . . . has . . . given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Cor. 1:21-22). That word “guarantee” is arrabon, meaning down payment; it’s the earnest money offered to seal the deal. The gift of the Holy Spirit is proof that God is in earnest about saving us.

So we lack no gifts while we wait for “the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Notice how Paul describes Christ’s return: the “revealing.” Now Jesus can only be seen with the eyes of faith by the power of the Spirit. But when he comes again every eye will see him. The wait will be over. —David Bast

As you pray, give thanks for the Spirit’s presence and power.
