The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
December 20, 2019

Read: Revelation 19:1-10

Let us rejoice . . . for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready. (v. 7)

The Bible often compares life in the world to come to a wonderful feast. Here is Isaiah: “On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine . . . He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces (Isa. 25:6, 8). Then there is the beatitude given to John in his vision of the end: “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Rev. 19:9).

So it’s not just any party; it’s a wedding banquet. Does that image do it for you? Maybe you’ve been a guest at a wedding where you didn’t know anybody very well, and the dinner was a bit of a drag. If you’re the parents of the couple, it might be hard to relax and enjoy the evening; so much to worry about, including how much everything is costing! But imagine you are the bride, seated at the head table with your husband, celebrating the night with the one you love.

That’s what it will be like for us when Jesus returns. We are the Bride. The church, the whole people of God throughout the ages, is the Jerusalem that is above, coming down from heaven adorned like a beautiful young woman coming down the aisle to join her beloved (Rev. 21:2). —David Bast

As you pray, imagine finally seeing the One you love.
