Read: Colossians 1:9-14

Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. (v. 12)

There is a lot to be learned about inheritance from the Bible. The ESV translation uses the word 187 times. Exodus 34 finds Moses flat on his face before God, pleading, “Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance” (Exodus 34:9 NIV). In answer to his plea, God renews the covenant. We are God’s inheritance, and God will spill his own blood to protect us.

Jesus tells a story about an attempt by tenants to steal the inheritance, even killing the landowner’s son. Three of four Gospels contain the parable, agreeing that the inheritance will be fought over, killed over, and the owner will return and give his vineyard to new tenants.

God will prevail, and an inheritance will be given to his children. Peter calls it a living hope, “an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven” (1 Peter 1:4). Paul calls it an inheritance in light. We might think of coming into land, or riches—but an inheritance in light and living hope are even better. Before that day, however, the Holy Spirit is “the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it” (Ephesians 1:14). A reward is coming, guaranteed, and we already possess the down payment. —Amy Clemens

As you pray, treasure the knowledge that you are an inheritance and have an inheritance.
