A Godly Sister
May 21, 2020
Read: Proverbs 7
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call insight your intimate friend. (v. 4)
Do you ever think about the “stupid” things you’ve done in life? Occasionally a moment, a word, a person, or a circumstance will remind me of a mistake I’ve made, and I’ll say to myself, “I should have known better.” In those thoughts, I am embarrassed with myself and regret how I may have hurt someone.
The wisdom writer knows (through his own experiences, I’m sure) what happens when we put wisdom aside and rely on our feelings: we submit to temptations. In this case, he is referring to adultery. But let’s expand his caution to consider all sin as “adultery,” or unfaithfulness to God. Sin comes when we don’t know any better, and sin also comes when we do know better but let feelings override our insight. Sin also occurs when we unwisely put our wants before God’s commands.
To resist sin, we must be wise in God’s Word. Read his words each day, and wisdom will become your “sister” to help you resist sin. Read God’s Word, and you will have insight to put into practice his life-saving truth. Second, understand that God’s commands are his words of love and faith to guide you.
Yes, say to wisdom, “You are my sister.” Become closely related to God’s commands, and you will be strong against sin’s deadly temptations. God’s love will surround you with a secure, protective shield. —Bob James
As you pray, ask God to make you wise in his Word.
