Freeing Others to Dream
September 4, 2020
Read: Genesis 41:1-16
I remember my offenses today . . . A young Hebrew was there with us [in custody] . . . When we told him, he interpreted our dreams to us. (vv. 9, 12)
Forced labor is when people are forced through threats of violence to work for no pay. When I first learned about human trafficking, I didn’t know what I could do to help. I was overwhelmed, but I knew I had to do something to help correct this injustice. As I learned more, I found out there were many people who felt the same way and were already working to combat the problem.
One effort is to end the demand for products made with forced labor. Whenever I shop, I make a point to buy products that are Fair Trade Certified or that come from a Certified B Corporation. Although some may be a little more expensive, these choices ensure that the people who made the products from start to finish have fair rights as employees, are paid fair wages, and are working in a safe work environment.
Joseph was a slave in Israel who had help from people around him. If the cupbearer had told Pharaoh about Joseph sooner, Joseph could have been out of prison earlier. Although God was sovereignly reigning over the circumstances and the timing, the cupbearer still had to do his part. Right now you have the opportunity to help people trapped in slavery. Together as the body of Christ, we can help put an end to modern slavery. —Kelly Brace
As you pray, ask God how he wants to use you to help end modern slavery.
