Modern Slavery Around the World
September 9, 2020
Read: Matthew 5:13-16
You are the light of the world . . . Let your light shine before others. (vv. 14, 16 NLT)
Now more than ever before, it is simple for human trafficking to occur because of the Internet. Sexual exploitation can be easily broadcast to viewers over the Internet. Victims can be lured through false relationships on social media.
The good news is that people are starting to talk about it. What started as a few voices has grown to include many voices. News stations are keeping people aware of problems. Lawyers are fighting for victims in court and keeping governments and corporations accountable. Social workers and therapists are working with victims after they are freed. For example, the International Justice Mission website reports that law enforcement in the Philippines is working to crack down on Internet-based cybercrime and trafficking. Children especially will benefit from this enforcement of cybersecurity and child welfare.
As the light of the world, we as Jesus’ disciples need to let our light shine and expose the darkness of human trafficking. The first step is to acknowledge that it’s real, and it’s all around us. Next, we need to take action. We need to educate ourselves and others and support the people who are directly involved in freeing and caring for victims. Let your light shine in whatever way that you can. —Kelly Brace
As you pray, remember the men and women who are helping freed slaves to heal from their trauma.
