A Living Sacrifice
April 12, 2021
Read: Romans 12:1-2
Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. (v. 1)
It takes a certain kind of person to be a police officer or firefighter: determination, grit, and a sense of duty. In their line of work, they run a lot of risk. The police officer goes into harm’s way to resolve a domestic dispute; the firefighter goes into a burning home to put out a fire and rescue anyone trapped inside. Of course, they don’t have to do this every day but only when they are called to. When they are on duty, they are constantly on alert, ready to serve and protect when the time comes.
Like police officers and firefighters, Christians are called to be on alert. Part of this call is to present ourselves as living sacrifices. By this, we mean that our whole being is dedicated to God. More than that, we put to rest our desires and passions in order to serve God. In effect, we are on high alert and remain ready to serve and sacrifice our desires and plans for God.
As you go about your day, remember your daily sacrifice in giving up your entire self to God. There is a decisiveness in the action of being a living sacrifice: it is an outward expression of an inward commitment that is made to God. Commit to sacrificing your full being in service to God out of a desire to be more like him. —Steve Wierenga
As you pray, thank God for the sacrifice of Christ. Ask for help in your daily endeavor to be more like him.
