The Whole Armor of God
April 29, 2021

Read: Ephesians 6:10-24

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. (v. 11)

Paul concludes Ephesians by helping us see that our struggle, as we run this race, is not ultimately against flesh and blood. There is an enemy, the devil, who wants to thwart God’s good work in the church and the world. Paul reminds us that the outcome of the battle has already been determined: God wins! All the dark forces have been defeated and are a footstool at the feet of Jesus (Eph. 1:22). Even though the devil’s fate has been sealed, he still wreaks havoc on our lives and in the world. So God provides us with heavenly armor that belongs to God himself (see Isaiah 59). The belt of truth. The breastplate of righteousness. The footgear of peace. The shield of faith. The helmet of salvation. The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. These are spiritual weapons that enable us to do battle (see 2 Cor. 10:3-6) and bear witness to God’s kingdom of peace, justice, and love. We also put on God’s armor by “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints” (v. 18). Prayer is our most potent weapon in this spiritual struggle. By prayer we stay alert and build resilience so we don’t lose heart. —Brian Keepers As you pray, ask the Spirit to help you put on the full armor of God today and to keep you alert to the devil’s schemes.
