Do You Believe God?
July 1, 2021
Read: Hebrews 11:1-12
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. (v. 6)
In the classic movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana embarks upon a search for the Holy Grail. When he approaches the final challenge, he finds himself at the edge of a canyon above a steep drop with no way to get to the other side. Believing the words of the challenge that spoke about a “leap of faith,” Indiana takes a deep breath, steps out . . . and immediately makes contact with a bridge that was always there, only camouflaged.
In Hebrews 11, the author recounts several challenging events our biblical heroes faced. From building a boat in a dry region to moving away from family without a sure destination, each person listed had at least one thing in common. They first believed in who God said he was, and then believed in whatever he said. However, the ultimate proof of their faith was their action, and God rewarded them for it.
The more time we spend knowing who God is, the easier time we’ll have believing what he says. Then, we must take the final step and do what he says. Yes, faith pleases God, but it’s a precursor to action. An inactive faith is useless (James 2:18-25). According to Dr. Tony Evans, senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, “If you say you trust God, it should affect your feet” (Tony Evans Bible Commentary). —Ericka Loynes
As you pray, seek God and then move in faith.
