How Can This Be?
July 12, 2021
Read: Luke 1:26-38
Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” (v. 34)
In 1961, President Kennedy addressed Congress with an audacious plan: land the first man on the moon before the end of the decade. When Kennedy first announced the idea, it must have seemed impossible to most Americans. The Soviet Union had been making far more advances in space, and NASA didn’t yet have the infrastructure to achieve such a task. Inspired by Kennedy’s challenge, NASA got to work, and by July 1969, the United States celebrated astronaut Neil Armstrong as the first person to step on the surface of the moon.
In today’s reading, Mary also heard a bold plan. The angel Gabriel announced that she had been chosen by God to give birth to the promised Messiah. Shocked by what she was told, Mary tried to process it. How could she have a child when she was still a virgin? It wasn’t possible. No one in human history had ever been born that way. Gabriel assured Mary that the power of God was doing the work. Comforted by his words, Mary believed, and indeed conceived the Savior (Luke 2:1-14).
With God, nothing is impossible (Luke 1:37). If he is driving the vision behind our wildest dreams, then there’s no question that we can achieve them. It’s time for us to release our fears and doubts and take hold of God’s hand. A little faith does little things. A big God does big things. Let’s give our little faith over to a big God. —Ericka Loynes
