Never Separated from God
September 6, 2021
The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master . . . the LORD was with him and . . . caused all that he did to succeed. (Gen. 39:2-3)
Yesterday’s devotional considered reasons why people experience transitions. It included the account of Jacob’s favoritism toward Joseph, including special treatment and a colorful coat. This contributed toward the jealous feelings of his brothers and led to their decision to sell him into slavery.
Genesis 39 reveals that Joseph served in the house of Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. This was the second great transition in Joseph’s life. He moved from the love of his father and the freedoms of his youth to working as a slave in a foreign country far from home. Still, God was with him every step of the way. Read verses 2-3 again: “The LORD was with Joseph,” “the LORD was with him,” and “the LORD caused all that he did to succeed” (see also vv. 21-23).
In whatever transitions you find yourself, I hope that you can sense God’s presence. Romans 8:37-39 reminds us that nothing can separate believers from God’s love. That is true whether you are serving time in prison, grieving the death of a loved one, feeling discouraged and alone, or facing any other unwanted change in your life. Find hope in the transitions of life, even if you are struggling to accept them, because Christians are never separated from God! —Steve Petroelje
As you pray, thank God for his loving presence and the ways he is at work in your life.
