The Right Prescription
By Steven Laman on February 16, 2022
Read: John 21:15-23
Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” (v. 22)
A few years ago, I noticed that I couldn’t read as well as I used to, so I went to the eye doctor. Her first suggestion was reading glasses, but taking them off and on was difficult for me. Next, I hoped non-prescription bifocals would be the solution, but the magnification did not line up with my eyes. Finally, my optometrist wrote a custom prescription. What a difference!
Jesus is the master at writing the right prescription for his children. He does not write prescriptions for glasses or medicine. Rather, he arranges every circumstance in the lives of his children for their good and his glory. Peter had a difficult time seeing this. Right after Jesus restored him after his denial, Jesus told him about his future. This brash fisherman did not like what he was hearing and tried to change the subject by asking about John’s future. Jesus did not play the comparison game. He simply said, “You follow me!”
Like Peter, I too have wished that the Lord would write a different prescription for my life. There were times that I longed that my circumstances would be more like those of my friends. Now, I am learning to accept the Lord’s plans for me. What a difference! Instead of playing the comparison game, I can focus on following him and serving him along the path he has specifically prescribed for me. Join me in doing the same? —Steven Laman
As you pray, thank the Lord for writing the right prescription for you.
