Wait for Him
By Gordon Van Wylen on March 21, 2022
Read: Isaiah 30:1-18
For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. (v. 18)
There is an interesting and encouraging pattern in many of Isaiah’s messages. They begin with a clear statement of the path God’s people are to follow and a stern warning of the consequences if they disobey. This is followed with assurance of God’s faithfulness, love and a gracious invitation to pursue a life of faith and obedience should they disobey.
Today’s reading is a typical example. Isaiah has counseled against the temptation for Judah to seek security against the threats and power of Assyria through a military and political alliance with Egypt. In biting, unambiguous words Isaiah states that their direction is a sin and not of God. If they persist, the results will be disastrous. Verses 6-9 describe the struggles of the envoys from Judah as they travel through a snake-infested desert, carrying material goods to Egypt to finalize this ill-conceived alliance.
In moving, beautiful poetry Isaiah sets forth God’s alternative: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” (v. 15) Then Isaiah gives the invitation: “Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.” (v. 18) Why would one resist such an invitation? —Gordon Van Wylen
As you pray, thank God that he never gives up on you. Commit yourself to returning and rest, quietness and trust
